Being a single mom comes with its own set of challenges, and taking a vacation on a tight—or nonexistent—budget can seem impossible. But with creativity, faith, and a little bit of planning, rest is still within reach.
As a zero-income Christian single mom, I’ve learned to lean into resourcefulness and rely fully on God’s provision. This week, I’m preparing to take my child on a week-long road trip in our SUV, car camping from Kansas City to St. Louis and back. Here’s how I’m making it possible, peacefully—and prayerfully.
🙏 Scripture for the Journey
“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you.”
— Isaiah 55:12
This verse reminds me that no matter how much (or little) we have, God leads us in peace. And sometimes, peace comes not from fancy hotels, but from quiet riversides and starry skies—places where God’s glory is on full display.
💡 Budget-Friendly Vacation Planning Tips
1. Car Camping Setup
Our SUV is our hotel. I’ve folded the back seats down and added a mattress pad, cozy blankets, and battery-powered lights. We’ll sleep in rest areas, public parks (where safe and legal), and church parking lots when permitted.
🛻 TIP: A fitted sheet over pool noodles in the window = instant privacy on a dime.
2. Food on EBT
With an EBT card, I’m grabbing sandwich supplies, fruit, granola, and even hot meals from participating gas stations and grocery delis. I pack a cooler with ice and refill it at every stop.
🍓 TIP: Pre-slice snacks to make mealtime quick and reduce mess in the car.
3. Free Nature Attractions
State parks, hiking trails, botanical gardens with free days, and city fountains or splash pads are all on our list. Nature is one of God’s best free blessings.
🌿 TIP: Use Google Maps to search for “free kid-friendly things to do near me” as you travel.
4. Keep It Christ-Centered
We start each morning with a devotional and end the day praying under the stars. We bring a Bible, a travel journal, and a speaker to play worship music while we drive.
⛺ TIP: Let your kids take turns reading a Scripture and writing what they learned that day.
💖 Why This Trip Matters
This isn’t just a vacation—it’s a reset. It’s a time to breathe, bond, and build memories without the weight of bills or noise of the world. As a single mom, I need these moments to refill my cup so I can keep pouring into my family and calling.
