Blessed Be the Gift: What Does It Mean to Be Blessed?
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." – James 1:17
For a long time, I have loved the name Blessed Be the Gift. It is more than the name of my business—it is a reminder of who God is and where every blessing in my life truly comes from.
Recently, while listening to a pastor teach on the Beatitudes, something clicked. He explained that the word blessed can also mean happy or joyful. That made me stop and think.
How often do we chase happiness in things that never last?
We tell ourselves we'll be happy when we get married, buy the house, find the perfect job, lose the weight, or finally have enough money. Yet those things, while they may be wonderful gifts, cannot sustain the deep joy our hearts long for.
Jesus paints a completely different picture.
In the Beatitudes, He says:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit... Blessed are those who mourn... Blessed are the meek..."
At first glance, those don't sound like happy people. They sound like people carrying burdens.
But Jesus wasn't talking about temporary feelings. He was talking about the deep joy that comes from walking with God. A joy that remains even when life is difficult.
As a Christian single mom, I understand that.
There have been seasons when I wondered how the bills would get paid. There have been days filled with tears after divorce, moments of loneliness, and times when I questioned what God was doing. Today, my life includes caring for my aging parents while raising my son and building a business from the ground up.
None of those circumstances automatically produce happiness.
Yet through every season, God has remained faithful.
He has provided exactly what I needed, often in ways I never expected.
Sometimes His gifts looked like financial provision.
Sometimes they looked like a hug from my son.
Sometimes they came through encouraging words from a friend, a verse that spoke directly to my heart, or simply the strength to face another day.
Those are gifts too.
James reminds us:
"Every good and perfect gift is from above."
Every answer to prayer.
Every sunrise.
Every opportunity.
Every lesson.
Every moment of grace.
Every breath.
They all come from our Heavenly Father.
That is why the name Blessed Be the Gift means so much to me.
It reminds me that the greatest gift is not what God gives—it is God Himself. His love. His mercy. His presence. His Son, Jesus Christ.
When we recognize the Giver, our hearts begin to see gifts everywhere.
We become grateful instead of resentful.
Hopeful instead of discouraged.
Content instead of constantly chasing more.
The world says happiness depends on our circumstances.
Jesus says blessing comes from belonging to Him.
That changes everything.
Today, I want to encourage you to pause and notice the gifts God has already placed in your life.
Maybe it's your family.
Maybe it's your church.
Maybe it's the strength to keep going.
Maybe it's simply another chance to begin again.
Whatever it is, don't overlook it.
The greatest blessings are often the ones we almost miss.
Prayer
Father, thank You for every good and perfect gift You have given. Open my eyes to recognize Your blessings each day, even in difficult seasons. Help me find my joy not in changing circumstances, but in Your unchanging character. Teach me to live with gratitude, trust, and a heart that always points back to You. Thank You for the greatest gift of all—Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
