What My Divorce Taught Me About Myself

What My Divorce Taught Me About Myself

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." — Romans 8:28 (KJV)

If someone had told me years ago that divorce would become part of my story, I never would have believed them.

When I stood before God and made my wedding vows, I meant every word. I believed marriage was forever. I believed that no matter how difficult life became, we would work through it together.

But life doesn't always unfold the way we planned.

Divorce has been one of the hardest experiences I have ever walked through. It brought heartbreak, uncertainty, financial struggles, legal battles, loneliness, and countless nights when I cried myself to sleep asking God why.

Yet, looking back, I can also see something I couldn't see while I was living through it.

God wasn't finished with me.

I Learned That My Identity Is Not My Marital Status

For a long time, I struggled with feeling like I had somehow failed.

I was no longer someone's wife.

I became "the divorced mom."

But God slowly reminded me that my identity was never found in another person.

It has always been found in Christ.

Before I was someone's wife...
Before I became a mom...
Before anyone knew my name...

I was already loved by God.

That truth changed everything.

I Learned That I Am Stronger Than I Ever Imagined

There were days I honestly didn't know how I was going to pay my bills.

There were moments when I wondered how I could possibly raise my children while carrying so much emotional weight.

There were times I felt completely alone.

Yet every single time I thought I couldn't take another step...

God carried me.

Looking back, I realize I was never walking alone.

I Learned That Faith Isn't Just Something We Talk About

It's easy to trust God when life is comfortable.

Real faith is choosing to trust Him when your heart is broken.

It's opening your Bible when you don't feel like reading.

It's praying when Heaven feels silent.

It's believing God's promises even when your circumstances tell a different story.

My faith became real because it had to.

I Learned That Forgiveness Is Freedom

Forgiveness doesn't erase what happened.

It doesn't pretend the hurt never existed.

It doesn't mean trust is automatically restored.

Forgiveness simply means I choose not to let bitterness become my future.

That has been one of the hardest lessons God continues to teach me.

I Learned That Being Alone Doesn't Mean Being Abandoned

There were seasons when the house felt incredibly quiet.

Sometimes the silence hurt.

But in those quiet moments, I began hearing God's voice more clearly than ever before.

He became my comfort.

My provider.

My counselor.

My peace.

His presence filled places I once thought only another person could.

I Learned That God Can Use Broken Pieces

Today I don't hide my testimony.

I share it because someone else may need hope.

Maybe another single mom is wondering if she'll ever smile again.

Maybe someone else is trying to rebuild after betrayal.

Maybe another woman feels forgotten.

If my story reminds even one person that God hasn't forgotten them, then none of this suffering has been wasted.

I Learned That My Children Are Watching

My boys have seen me cry.

They've seen me work hard.

They've seen me pray when I didn't know what else to do.

They've watched me keep going.

I hope they learn that following Jesus doesn't mean life is easy.

It means we have Someone faithful to walk with us through every difficult season.

I Learned That God Still Has Plans For Me

Divorce was not the end of my story.

It became the beginning of a different chapter.

One where I'm learning new skills.

Building a business.

Creating content that encourages others.

Serving my family.

Taking care of my parents.

Raising my son.

Growing closer to Christ every day.

None of those dreams erase the pain.

But they remind me that God still writes beautiful stories after broken chapters.

Final Thoughts

If you're walking through divorce today, I want you to know something.

You are not defined by your past.

You are not forgotten.

You are not too broken for God to use.

He still has purpose for your life.

He still has work for you to do.

He still sees every tear you've cried.

Sometimes the hardest seasons become the very testimony God uses to strengthen someone else's faith.

My divorce taught me many things.

But above all, it taught me this:

People may leave.

Circumstances may change.

Dreams may fall apart.

But Jesus Christ remains faithful.

And that is enough.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for never leaving me, even in the darkest seasons of my life. Thank You for using pain to draw me closer to You. Help me continue to forgive, continue to grow, and continue to trust Your plan. May my story always point others toward Your grace and Your faithfulness. Strengthen every person reading this who is walking through heartbreak today, and remind them that You are still writing their story.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
